Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a "tummy tuck," is a body-contouring procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the underlying abdominal muscles to create a flatter, firmer, and more toned midsection. It is one of the most effective solutions for patients who have loose, hanging abdominal skin and weakened muscles that cannot be corrected through diet and exercise alone. At Dr Amit Aesthetics in Aligarh, Dr. Amit Agrawal performs abdominoplasty with meticulous attention to both aesthetics and function.

Overview

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a "tummy tuck," is a body-contouring procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the underlying abdominal muscles to create a flatter, firmer, and more toned midsection. It is one of the most effective solutions for patients who have loose, hanging abdominal skin and weakened muscles that cannot be corrected through diet and exercise alone. At Dr Amit Aesthetics in Aligarh, Dr. Amit Agrawal performs abdominoplasty with meticulous attention to both aesthetics and function.

Ideal candidates include individuals with significant abdominal skin laxity following pregnancy, major weight loss, or aging. Women who have had multiple pregnancies often develop diastasis recti — a separation of the rectus abdominis muscles — which causes a persistent abdominal bulge even at a healthy weight. Abdominoplasty is the only effective treatment for diastasis recti, as the muscles are surgically stitched back together during the procedure.

Three primary techniques are available depending on the extent of correction needed. Liposuction alone may be sufficient for patients with good skin elasticity who need only fat removal. A mini-abdominoplasty addresses the area below the navel with a shorter incision and is suitable for patients with limited skin excess. A full abdominoplasty involves a hip-to-hip incision along the bikini line, removal of excess skin from the navel to the pubic area, muscle tightening, and navel repositioning. Dr. Agrawal evaluates each patient's anatomy and goals to recommend the most appropriate approach, always placing the incision low enough to be concealed by underwear or a swimsuit.

What it addresses

  • Full abdominoplasty with muscle repair
  • Mini-abdominoplasty for lower abdominal concerns
  • Liposuction-assisted abdominoplasty
  • Diastasis recti (muscle separation) repair
  • Umbilicoplasty (navel reshaping)
  • Panniculectomy (removal of overhanging skin apron)

Recovery & aftercare

Bed rest is recommended for the first 2–3 days, with patients encouraged to walk in a slightly bent posture to avoid tension on the incision. Surgical drains are typically placed and removed within 3–7 days. Sutures are removed at 1–2 weeks. A compression garment must be worn for 4–6 weeks to reduce swelling and support the repaired muscles. Most patients return to light work within 2 weeks. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are restricted for 6–8 weeks. Swelling gradually subsides over 3–6 months, with the final contour becoming fully apparent at approximately 6 months.

Common questions

Is abdominoplasty a weight loss procedure?
No. Abdominoplasty is a body-contouring procedure, not a weight loss surgery. It is designed for patients who are at or near their target weight but have excess abdominal skin, stubborn fat deposits, and/or muscle laxity that diet and exercise cannot resolve. Patients should ideally be within 10–15% of their goal weight before the procedure.
Will the tummy tuck scar be visible?
The incision is placed low on the abdomen along the bikini line, designed to be concealed by underwear or a swimsuit. The scar is initially red and may be firm, but it progressively fades and flattens over 6–12 months. Dr. Agrawal uses layered closure techniques and provides scar care guidance to optimize healing.
Can I have children after a tummy tuck?
While a tummy tuck does not prevent future pregnancies, it is generally recommended for patients who have completed their family. A subsequent pregnancy can stretch the repaired muscles and skin, potentially compromising the results. If pregnancy does occur, the surgery can be revised afterward.
